Here is a neat link that will show you how to tell the difference between a coyote and a wolf. I can see why it is hard to tell the difference at a distance!
It seems that we have a large predator in the area! Our neighbors about a quarter of a mile up the street lost their little Corgi/Dachshund mix about a month ago. Two weeks ago our neighbors a couple of miles away lost one of their goats. The predator was able to carry the goat off as they never found the goat and no one else has seen it. All their other animals were spooked all weekend long. Vince saw something in our neighbors back yard and thought it was Cisco. He stepped outside and whistled to call him back. I looked and told him that it wasn't Cisco as he was sleeping in the sun next to the house. Vince said it looked like a giant coyote after trying to look at through a scope. It was moving pretty quickly so it was hard to identify. About a week previous to this sighting, the dogs ran something off the southern end of the property. My husband again said that it looked like a coyote but as it ran across a field it looked too big to be a coyote. We at the time assumed that it might have been a deer. Hard to tell over long distances. We have heard that more people are seeing Cougars! Some hunters back in 2013 shot what looked like a very large male coyote in western Kansas but sent it in to be tested and it came back a wolf! A couple of farmers have said that they are pretty sure they saw a wolf. Some of the neighbors are setting up trail cams to hopefully get a picture of what is around here. I am thankful for our dogs who have kept everything safe on our property! Cisco is up most the night barking and warning! He sleeps hard during the day. Luci has been pampered and stays inside in night as she sleep very hard toward the end of her pregnancy. She can tell if Cisco needs help and will start barking in the house to be let out,

Here is a video showing puppy movement! The video was taken by my 8 year old! She did a pretty good job! Luci is getting very uncomfortable and has to go outside to go to the bathroom often. She wakes me up around 5 times a night to be let out. It won't be very much longer! She can have puppies safely anytime from today on. The very latest she could have puppies would be around March 8th. I think she will go around March 2nd but we shall see! In the video: Watch from her flank all the way down! Lots of rolling and kicking! Luci is 51 to 54 days pregnant. The pups have their full coat of hair by now and are just adding more weight. They are becoming quite crowded in the uterus now. I will try to take a video of all the puppy movements when Luci is resting. She is doing a lot of that lately and she can't seem to get comfortable. Pups can be safely born after day 56. She should be giving birth in about 10 days or so!
The first hairs are starting to appear and the skeleton ossifies. The coat is one of the last organs to develop, as is the skeleton which only begins to ossify in the final third of gestation. Puppies are well developed, and now begin attaining size in preparation for birth. They now weigh 75% of their birth weight!
Felt puppies moving and hiccuping in Luci's belly today! Heard the little heartbeat through the stethoscope too! So exciting! Go to Expected Litter page to see more belly pictures of Luci.
